On December 6, 2016, the 99th anniversary of the explosion in Halifax harbour, NiS+TS joined Millbrook First Nation elder Catherine Martin in commemorating the Mi’kmaq community of Turtle Grove. The community was destroyed by the blast and ensuing tsunami from the 1917 Explosion. In Martin’s words, the ceremony was an occasion “to honour those who have gone before us, especially those who died in the Halifax explosion, in Turtle Grove and everywhere.” With the bright sun shining, the ceremony took place on the Tufts Cove waterfront near École Shannon Park School, in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People.
